The Color Purple, an upcoming American musical coming-of-age period drama film, is directed by Blitz Bazawule. Marcus Gardley wrote the screenplay, adapting it from the stage musical of the same name, itself based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel. This marks the second film adaptation following Steven Spielberg’s 1985 version. Returning to produce are Spielberg, Quincy Jones, Scott Sanders, and Oprah Winfrey, who also starred in the 1985 film as Sofia. The cast includes Fantasia Barrino in her film debut as Celie, alongside Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi. Barrino and Brooks reprise their roles from stage musical productions.

The Color Purple is estimated to be made on a budget of around US $150 million. It is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 25, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
